Provincial Minister of Finance and Economic Opportunities, Mireille Wenger, lauded the concerted efforts of the public and private sectors, highlighting their role in catalyzing job creation. “In just three sectors in the Western Cape, we have witnessed the creation of nearly 160,000 jobs since 2021. This achievement is a testament to the power of partnerships and the unwavering commitment to job creation,” stated Minister Wenger.

One of the key drivers of this success has been the implementation of targeted programs within DEDAT. In the clothing and textiles sector alone, 402 previously unemployed youths were provided with skills training and employment opportunities. Additionally, a partnership with Airports Company South Africa resulted in the training and placement of 124 youths at Cape Town International Airport, where they assist travelers and handle passenger processing during peak times.

The Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) sector has also played a pivotal role in fostering job growth. Through collaboration with the thriving BPO industry, 2,196 young individuals were upskilled and employed full-time in the sector. This ongoing initiative has provided a significant boost to not only the sector but also the broader economy, particularly during the festive season.

Reflecting on the achievements of 2023, Minister Wenger emphasized the importance of nurturing talent to fully harness the potential of the Western Cape’s economy. The government remains committed to working alongside partners and stakeholders to invest in qualifications, skills, and experiences that align with current and future job opportunities. By doing so, they aim to create even more employment prospects and secure a brighter future for all residents of the province.

The success story unfolding in the Western Cape serves as a beacon of hope for South Africa’s workforce, showcasing the transformative power of strategic collaboration and targeted skills development programs. Despite the prevailing economic challenges, the province has managed to overcome adversity and unlock its full potential, offering a compelling case study for other regions grappling with similar hurdles.

For job seekers looking to embark on a promising career path, the Western Cape presents a wealth of opportunities across various sectors.
