Job Description

Our client, a reputable company in the fire protection industry, looking for a talented and detail-oriented Designer to play a crucial role in designing impactful and fully compliant fire protection systems in Bryanston, Johannesburg.

As a Designer, you will be responsible for coordinating design projects, managing project delivery, ensuring compliance and quality standards, and fostering effective relationships with project teams and customers. This role requires strong technical expertise, project management skills, and a commitment to delivering exceptional results.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Project Design:

  • Coordinate design for allocated projects, including preparing for the project, understanding design requirements, defining project timelines, and managing project team delivery.
  • Participate in project meetings to gather customer and operational requirements, verify technical specifications, discuss project timing, and gather information to share with the design team.
  • Lead project design teams, allocate design tasks, provide technical guidance and oversight, and integrate all parts of the design into the final design.
  • Ensure project design compliance and quality by reviewing completed designs, verifying compliance with standards and requirements, making necessary amendments, and obtaining final signoff.
  • Present designs to project teams and engage in discussions to receive feedback, debate design amendments, and implement approved changes.
  • Mentor junior design team members, monitor the design process, provide guidance and technical advice, and support improved delivery.
  • Conduct post-implementation profit analysis of projects, evaluate design assumptions versus actual outcomes, calculate design costs, develop recommendations to improve future project profitability, and seek approval.

Design:

  • Complete CAD designs by applying design standards and requirements, checking for cost management and value for money, and ensuring designs are completed within deadlines.
  • Calculate hydraulic requirements for cost-effective pipe size application, reviewing water supply parameters, allocating pipe sizes, and applying them to the design.
  • Conduct site measurements for existing building designs, gather necessary tools and equipment, visit the site, take accurate measurements and relevant notes, and file them electronically to support design accuracy.
  • Apply compliance and cost management requirements to designs, maintain compliance expertise, and ensure accuracy and completeness before submitting for sign-off.
  • Manage design workplan, prioritize tasks based on project deadlines, and deliver designs within agreed timelines.
  • Contribute to partial designs as part of larger projects, aligning designs with overall project principles, checking for cost management and value for money, and delivering to standards and deadlines.
  • Engage with clients on designs to secure approval, present designs to professional teams/consultants/clients, understand requirements, discuss potential improvements, and complete designs within agreed parameters.
  • Maintain CAD design and compliance expertise by participating in forums and workshops, sharing expertise with other designers, and staying updated on enhancements and requirements.

Design Administration:

  • Complete project administration tasks, update project plans, and fulfill additional administrative requirements within deadlines.
  • Prepare design reports, gather information, collate data, and complete reports in the defined format within agreed deadlines.
  • Maintain design documentation by filing designs according to the established convention and framework, updating databases, and fulfilling other administrative tasks as required.
  • Monitor project design profitability, track project costs, identify cost management opportunities, implement design improvements, and track design errors and costs regularly.
  • Assist in costing sales proposals by completing initial designs, collaborating with estimators to develop pricing, and discussing design improvements and cost management options.
  • Submit ASIB documentation for inspections upon project completion, collate required documentation, check for compliance, submit to ASIB authority, resolve queries, and obtain ASIB certification.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • AutoCAD and/or Revit qualification.
  • ASIB/IFE Certificate or similar certification is required.
  • Relevant experience in fire protection design, with 3-5 years’ experience as a Designer.
